Sphinx
Taken from a French Second Empire neo-classical pattern, deriving ultimately from grotesque decoration of the late Roman Empire. A more lyrical and naturalistic treatment is given to classical motifs as a reaction to the severe Napoleonic style.
The document had almost completely faded away, and the pattern was redrawn and given a fresh, but authenticly period styling.
